major cooldown in store. your full forecast in moments. >> i found some folks stopped at the bay bridge toll plaza. as well as other incidents reported as you approach, coming up. picturesque. that is beautiful. in san francisco. the temperatures have been smoking. 80 in october. christina's going to remind us they're having a little cooldown so brace yourselves. it is wednesday, october 3rd. this is "today in the bay." straight up 5:00 on the nose. good morning, everybody. always happy to have you with us. >> 5:00 now. firefighters are dealing with a three alarm fire in berkeley this morning. the house is a smoldering ruin right now. this is happen on ben venue avenue in berkeley.

that is where "today in the bay's" christy smith joins us with an update on the massive fire. >> reporter: i just got an update from the deputy fire chief. he says the good news is the fire is out. right now, he says it's out, they're just making sure basically nothing flares up this morning. that's why they still have their ladder truck here. when they arrived, flames were racing through the back of this home. two serious concerns right away, making sure of course that everyone was out, but also the integrity of the building itself. there was a partial collapse of the roof and the second floor. this fire started around 12:19 in a duplex here on benevenue. it is a dupe plex but i'm told only one family lives here. firefighters had to fight the flames from the outside with water and houses from their water truck. the houses here very close together. that meant that neighbors had to

evacuate too. >> the fire was threatening adjacent structures. we also had a rescue that was in progress in which berkeley police officers helped remove a woman who was in a wheelchair. there are four other occupants who are able to get out of the building. >> reporter: so, again, everyone okay. no injuries. the red cross is helping the five people, the family members who live inside that home. they're at a hotel. fire investigators are there, but i'm told the building is so badly damaged that they're going to have to get some excavation work in the back. building inspectors should be here by day break as well. basically, the rear of the building is gone. damage estimates are in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. they're telling me that should

be cleared up soon. for the fire trucks, this will be blocked off for several more hours. trying to track down a man would attacked a man and his family. police say a man was just walking to his car when the men approached, punched him in the face and forced him in the house. the suspects took cash and a briefcase which contain a handgun. if you have any information, please call mountain view police. the body of a second fisherman missing since sunday has been found on a beach north of pigeon point off the coast. the man was 1 of 4 friends from san francisco on a boat that capsized near hatham bay. 2 of the 49 men were wearing life jackets and were able to swim for help. the body of the first missing man washed to shore monday.

the two men who dieded we ed we wearing life jackets. investigators in lafayette now say the drowning of a man over the labor day weekend was in fact an accident. late last night, the case was closed. an autopsy of the 20-year-old showed olson had a blood chock level of .23, almost three times the legal driving limit. he also had cocaine in his system. olson disappeared while tubing on the sacramento river september 2nd. his body was found a week later. jurors will hear more testimony today at the trial for the woman accused of killing nursing student michelle lay. the attorney is arguing it was a crime of passion and not premeditated. as her boyfriend took the stand yesterday, telling jurors about her escalating jealousy of his relationship with lay. the woman's lawyer argues she was at an emotional low at the time of the murder and fighting

for custody of her 5-year-old child. decision 2012 now. the time a lot of people have been waiting for. the very first presidential debate taking place later on today. both president obama and mitt romney spending the day getting some last-minute preparations in before the the two step up to f the nation. security did a sweep just a few hours ago. romney is already in colorado. president obama is set to be there today it this is the first time the two have met face-to-face in five years. the latest nbc news poll showing romney has momentum. he is just three points behind president obama. still political experts say tonight's crucial for the republican candidate. >> the president has an opportunity to put this race away if he has some great night and mitt romney has a really bad night. mitt romney has to have a good night to get this trajectory of this race to change. >> likely a lot of things going back and forth in this one.

tonight's debate's main focus will be on domestic policy. and of course make sure to check out the debate action. right here on nbc bay area. you can tune in an hour early for local news right here, followed by "nightly news" starting at 5:30. antioch police are searching for someone who has been throwing debris on to traffic down below. it happened at the g street overcrossing on three occasions. monday, an ambulance was damaged by something thrown from that overpass. twice last week, a man and a woman had their cars badly damaged. nobody was hurt in those incidents. anyone with information is asked to call antioch police. brand-new proposal would make it, soon, a crime to be naked in public in san francisco. a city supervisor representing the castro district proposing the measure yesterday.

this would ban nudity in plazas, urban parks, sidewalks, streets and on public transportation. street fairs, festivals and parades would be exempt. if they are approved, nudists would be slapped with a $100 fine for their first offense and $500 for a third strike. right now state law does not ban public nudity. it does prohibit lewd public behavior. the gates will be locked at san jose's allen rock park. san jose fire officials say there are still extreme fire conditions because of the hot weather. if -- well, when the weather cools off, the city says it will re open that park. it will be cooling off very soon and maybe a week away, maybe some rain too. >> oh, yeah, we've got some major changes ahead. we're going to get much cooler. we're going to hold on to that pattern basically through next

week. temperatures already dropping off today. we want to start with this crystal clear look over the port of oakland. you'll notice we are getting a little bit choppier on the bay at this point. the winds are picking up. they're shifting out of west. that's a good sign of a cooler day ahead. temperatures are mild. especially down in the south bay. 67 degrees. you're at 62 in san mateo. campbell's at 78. because it was so warm yesterday in cooper tino, you're starting the morning at 81 degrees. we have some changes ahead. an area low pressure is on the way. look at what happened. starting to get some low clouds creeping toward that coastline. that will continue overnight. tomorrow, we wake up with mostly cloudy conditions. that westerly flow carries in that cool ocean air and we'll drop that temperature off ten degrees. then another ten degrees friday. then we drop like a rock this weekend. 94 in livermore. san francisco, 78.

83 in loss gatos. wanted to point out hayward yesterday hit 94. as we head throughout the afternoon, it will be cooler. just keep that in mind. hopefully that will help with your drive as well. feeling a little crisp in some cities. >> pretty light volume of traffic right now. give it an hour, that will change dramatically. right now, smooth flow. we'll show you the maps and the approach. your typical construction around the area. two earlier incidents, both westbound 80, have cleared now. as well as well coming down toward emeryville. moving off of the roadway. christy smith still at the scene near college, but it sounds like traffic through that intersection is okay but right at that fire just off the way on benvenue, that will be an issue at least till they clear that. we had an earlier accident involving a deer that has been

welcome back at 5:14. there's going to be a whole lot of action on the san francisco waterfronts this week. of course, it is the start of fleet week. but today also marks the start of qualifying races for round two of the america's cup world series. today in the bay's bob riddle is live on the bay with more for us this morning. hey, bob, how's it going? >> reporter: good morning. very nice here today. we're just off pier 32 where you've got some boats that are competing later today. you've got eight teams. 11 racing craft. you'll see more of them later this afternoon, they will be out on the water for the first day of competition. in this session of the america's

cup world series. out there on the water, probably have to argue, probably the best seat in the house, the principal race officer. good morning. >> good morning. >> reporter: what does that mean, being the principal race officer? >> basically, i'm the one in the middle of the race box and facilitates the racing, puts the marks where they need to be. >> reporter: the puppet master? >> pretty much. >> reporter: we have the races in august. comparing them to this week, you've got fleet week this week. >> well, one of the things with fleet week, they have a set air box or ditch box that's controlled by the faa so we must sail within that box as it's established by the u.s. coast guard. that box is about 100 yards off the beach. so the boats won't necessarily be as close to the beach as they were in august. they will also be closer to alcatraz. the conditions are a little different because of the time of the year. >> it was sunny and warm.

summer in san francisco. breeze is a little lighter. we saw about 15 knots of breeze. still great racing. we're looking forward to it the rest of the week. >> reporter: qualifying round today for the match racing at 4:05. best place to watch, marina green, you can go out there. and the america's cup village is further west, off the green this time, because they wanted to leave space for fleet week. there's plenty of places to stand up there. reporting live, off pier 30/32 at the beautiful ac 45s today in the background. a woman now is suing venture capital firm kleiner perkins for sexual harassment and she's been fired now. scott mcgrew has been monitoring this. it seems even the dismissal is shrouded in controversy. >> reporter: she says she's been fired. kleiner perkins says she wasn't. the junior partner claims on a website posting this morning she was, quote, terminated.

and told to clean out her office on monday. she's in the midst of that sexual harassment lawsuit against the firm. in a statement this morning, kleiner perkins says the woman is still an employee. though she's being transitioned, in their word, from the company. we can say the woman's picture and buyography are still on the website so the controversy continues. here's a face we haven't seen in a while, jackie deangelo, live at cnbc world headquarters. >> the futures are higher this morning after we saw a mixed day yesterday. the dow slipping as investors started to turn their focus and concerns to the upcoming earning season. also, europe remains in the spotlight as well as traders are mulling spain's rekwecht for a bailout it the european markets are higher this morning. here in the u.s., we're going to get some data today on private sector jobs and also u.s. services for the nonmanufacturing sector. the dow fell 32 poib points to

at 13482. the nasdaq moving up a little higher. american airlines is expanding inspections of jets that could have seats that were improperly secured, from 8 to 47, just out of caution. they found planes with seats coming loose due to clamps that were incorrectly installed. american is set to resume contract talks with its pilot union. they will delay releasing results of a vote to authorize a strike. new report, say tomorrow google will add street view to its mobile maps. you've been able to use street view on the web and up till a couple weeks ago on google's iphone app. many iphone users have been going to the mobile website. it did everything the old app did except street view as we walked down street here. to be clear, this is not a new app. it's just an addition to the

relatively difficult process of checking the map's website using your phone. at least you get street view back. you can look at the outside of the building you want to visit and make sure you're getting to the right place. tracking a little bit of a cooler forecast today. >> yeah, and then much cooler with some showers as we get into the weekend. we've got some major changes ahead. sharp turns in the weather department. let's start with a beautiful live picture. this is the last morning we'll have this kind of clarity over san jose, san francisco and oakland tomorrow. the low clouds return. that means the natural cool aeft comes back to the bay. some impressive highlights. 107 in gill roy. santa roz sa hit 102. downtown san francisco, 94 degrees. so you can imagine all the tourists who have come into town, they were seeking shade like you wouldn't believe yesterday. today, it's going to feel a

little bit more like the norm. traditionally, we hit about 70 degrees this time of year in san francisco. that looks to be the case for today. you're starting out at 60. 67 degrees, mild in san jose, to kick off the date. with the warm start, we are going to get more low cloud cover. but it will be about as warm as some of your trivalley cities as twaz yesterday, give or take about 5 degrees. tomorrow, the cooler kicks into high gear. it will take a day for that warm air to mix out of the area though. 94 in livermore. 95 in fairfield. still close to 100 in gill roy at 96. 78 in san francisco. thursday into friday, look at what happens, we drop from 94 to the 70s. by monday, struggling to break out of the 60s with showers ahead. so you're really giving your wardrobe a healthy workout and likely getting some showers overnight sunday into monday.

worldwide. ceo meg whitman is holding an analyst meeting today. the expectation is today whitman will lay out a grand master plan for hp. hps been suffering as fewer people bought computers. it's one of the oldest companies in the valley. it's been eclipsed by google, apple, facebook. what whitman will say is obviously anyone's guess. but more job cuts are not impossible. one thing though is hp hasn't actually completed its last round of job cuts which were about 28,000 people. so we may not see that but that's the fear, that there are job cuts ahead. we will continue to monitor it all day. >> we are continue to follow developing news in the east bay this morning. firefighters are still on the scene of a house fire in berkeley. it's happen on benvenue avenue not far from the intersection of

"today in the bay" christy smith has the latest. >> reporter: the deputy fire chief says this massive house fire burning overnight is out. but he says the back of his home is so damaged. they may have to wait till day break to get a good look. they may have to even do some excavation work because there is so much damage. there was a partial collapse of both the roof and the second floor. there is concern about the stability of this structure. starting at about 12:19 this morning, a three alarm fire. this is a duplex used as a single family home. five people live inside. firefighters tried to put the flames out. but the situation got so dangerous they had to back out of the building and go on a defensive mode. all five of the people got out except for one woman in a

wheelchair. it was police that had to jump in to help her. >> i think the police officers who removed her reported that the heat and smoke were just above their heads. so they entered into an atmosphere which would be challenging. >> and they were heroes? >> in my mind, they are heroes. >> other homes in this neighborhood are big and they're so close together that neighbors had to be evacuated as well, but they are back home right now, i'm told. those five people, the family members, they're displaced, but they're getting help from the red cross. they're staying at a hotel right now. earlier, the larger street here was impacted. right now, all the fire trucks are gone so it's completely open. i'm told this street here will be blocked at least through most of the morning. reporting live in berkeley, christy smith, "today in the bay." new this morning from san jose, a man remains hospitalize and a gun man is on the loose. officers say it happened around

11:30 not too far from seven industriy trees boulevard and center road near andrew hill high school. the victim is expected to survive. so far, no one has been arrested in this case. police have not released yet a description of any possible suspects. 5:34. decision 2012. we're just hours from the first presidential debates. we do have -- the debate is going to be held at the university of denver where the can'ts candidates will take on dope mettic policy tonight. president obama will be there this afternoon. both sides spent the week preparing for the showdown. in richmond, residents want action today against chevron oil refinery. activists will be there rallying, demanding immediate safety improvements at that plant. richmond city council passing a resolution last night demanding chevron update its equipment and

it also wants the company to increase its financial support and the hiring in that community. just last august, a pipeline ruptured releasing a large vapor cloud. releasing toxic fumes throughout the surrounding areas. police say they have nabbed a woman who could have been responsible for a string of robberies. she was arrested in palo alto monday morning when a man found her rummaging through her car. officers say they found a stolen credit card, social security card and more than 50 car keys on her. the items belong to two other victims. one in san jose, one in santa clara. this morn, san jose police are not giving up their search for the man who has been missing. last seen two weeks ago. leaving a friend's home on the back of a motorcycle.

relatives and friends at the sacred heart church praying last night for eric garcia's safe return. the family confirming 32-year-old garcia is the member of the mongol motorcycle club. at this point police say they don't know if foul play was involved. garcia's family says he has a heart condition and does not have his medication. >> 5:36. true story. on the way to work, one man had his top down in the convertible. >> good living. >> it means it's warm outside. let's check the forecast and christina. >> i saw you getting out on the way in this morning. just kidding. we've got a good looking day shaping up. she's right. it's 70 degrees almost in san jose . we had a great nice over the past couple of days. this is what happens when we don't have low clouds to cool us off. temperatures just soar through the roof. today, we're going to see a return of those low clouds. we are mild to start. look at this. we stop the clock for you right at noon.

you can see low clouds starting to make their way up to the peninsula. as you commute home over the bay bridge, the return of the fog. the golden gate. this fog is going to cool us off. it is going to change rapidly. the reason why, we're going to see those clouds return with such quickness is because we've got an area of low pressure tracking closer and closer to the coast. the same area of low pressure that will potentially bring us some showers which we need because it's still pretty hazy out there. air quality has not been great. 93 degrees inland today. 75 at the coast. temperatures drop, ooh, they drop like a rock. we'll take you through that forecast. the seven days says it all. first, want to check your drive, see how we're doing on a hump day. oakland, we're getting over the high rise at high street. there's another bump in your roadway. but smooth drive in both directions past the coliseum.

5:41. the stage is set. the nation is waiting for the first presidential debate 2012. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is live where president obama and mitt romney will meet face-to-face for the first time in five years. >> reporter: they've been prepa preparing, the president, the last couple of days in nevada. for the most part, he's been behind closed doors. preparing for this debate. mitt romney is already here. he's been behind closed doors preparing for this debate. we're told aides are working on him keeping his cool. not appearing irritated when he's challenged. which he's sure to be at this debate. now, on the other side, president obama is working with

aides to keep his answers a bit shorter. they don't want him to be long-winded. but also to be more aggressive. it's the issues people are really listening for here. the debate is divideded into six segments. 15 minutes each. they're going to talk about the economy. and jobs. and health care. and the role of government. a number of things. what they want to try to do in those 15 minutes is really get in depth. get beyond the canned answers. and try to get in depth. so that voters can hear some specifics about how they want to create jobs or how they think the government should be involved in health care. that's what we're expecting here at the richie center tonight. the candidate's doing their final walk-through this afternoon. marla. >> all right, thank you. you can watch that debate right here. and of course we will have your

that family, about 75 supporters of 18-year-old alan blueford just packed the chamber. after nearly two hours, the family finally given a copy of the official police report. something they say they've been asking for. blueford was shot and killed after police say he tried to run away from him. at first, police said he's been killed in an exchange of gunfire that injushed the officer. they later said the gun believed to be blueford's was recovered from that scene, it had not been fired and the officer's wound was self-inflicted. >> there's hundreds more behind us. then there will be thousands. there will be no business as usual in oakland until there's justice for allen. >> i feel as his mother that's my right. >> the district attorney and oakland police still investigating that shooting. they will be deciding if it was justified or not.

new charges filed against a man accused of trying to abduct a girl. 25-year-old bradley morsic was charged with 18 new counts yesterday. police say he hid in a daily city elementary school bathroom in march and tried to take pictures of four girls. that teacher who confronted morsic identified him to police. he was arrested last month for allegedly trying to kidnap a girl from parkside elementary school. he will be in court to enter a plea on that san mateo case on october 10th. the allen rock union school district says it is now eliminating 18 teaching positions. it also plans to combine dozens of classes to try to cut down on spending. the district says these moves will save them more than $1 million. school officials blaming shrinking enrollment which reduce the amount of funding coming in from the states. high noon, oakland style, getting ready for the final game of the season.

san francisco recover more quickly then just about any other american city. according to a report that will be released a little bit later this morning. our scott mcgrew, the recovery is too fast. >> there's been talk of another bubble but even of a bigger concern, is tech changing what san francisco's all about? the san francisco chamber of commerce this morning will release a new study that weighs the good and the bad. there's lots of good. incomes are up. of course, that's pushed rents higher. the study is authorized by this man, john sylvia. who knows his numbers. he's chief economist for wells fargo bank. an article in a recent edition of "san francisco" magazine asked how much tech can one city take? this san francisco resident points out the things that draw people and tech companies to san francisco, funky restaurant, the art scene. but at risk if the rents get too high. iran has shut its biggest
